Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean (under 20 USD/night)

How many times have you been told the Caribbean is not a backpackers friendly destination? While it’s true that the place is not the cheapest, you still can find cheap accommodation for those travelling on a budget. Here are some places you can stay for under 20 dolars per night.

Le Chateau Blanc (Castries – Saint Lucia)

Price: 17 USD per night

Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean

It’s a fantastic place if you decide to stay in Castries. Located 5 minutes away from the city center, this small guesthouse is run by a wonderful local family. Bathroom is shared and they let you use their kitchen. There is no wifi here, but some neigbour’s open wifi network used to get to my room so I could use it. The price is negotiable and the longer you stay the cheaper it gets. To get to Le Chateau Blanc take Morne Doudon Road and walk uphill for 5 minutes. It’s on the left side of the street. A white building with a sign saying “apartments for rent” painted on the wall.

Lambi’s Guesthouse (Union Island – SVG)

Price: 18 USD per night

Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean

It’s a popular place on the island situated in Clifton. The place is way too big for the amount of tourists around so bargain is easy here (and a must in order to get a good price). The place gets bad reviews on the internet but I had a good experience. My room (number 3) was clean, big and with air conditioned. There is wifi available for a fee. The owner was friendly and the place is located right in the center of Clifton by the water.

Crayfish Bay State Farm (Non Pariel – Grenada)

Price: 18 USD per night

Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean

Kim and Lylette run this Cocoa Farm with accommodation available on-site. The place is located in the far north of the island of Grenada, near Non Pariel, a fantastic off the beaten path place to experience the local culture. There are different options to sleep, from dormitory to fully equiped cabins that sleep up to 4 people. They also offer breakfasts and dinners. Free wifi available. Don’t miss the chocolate!

Island Time (San Juan – Puerto Rico)

Price: 16 USD per night

Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean

One of the few budget hostels in San Juan. Dorms are small but they all have their own bathroom inside the room. Free wifi is available and there is a shared kitchen to cook your meals. There are lots of friendly people working here for their accommodation so it’s a good place to meet other travellers. The Old San Juan is 10 minutes bus ride away (or 45 minutes walk) while the beach is 10 minutes on foot.

Camping Area St Anne (St Anne – Martinique)

Price: 15 USD per night

Travel Budget of Backpacking in Martinique

Not a hostel but a camping area. Towards the end of the beach in St Anne, around Pointe Marin, this place is a sweet spot to base yourself and explore the south of the island. The price for a tent is 12 euros (for 2 people) but they also have tents available if you don’t have your own (for an extra cost). No wifi available. The town is very quiet during the week and the location is perfect if you want to explore the beaches nearby or hike the Traces des Caps Route.

Falls View Guesthouse (Trafalgar – Dominica)

Price: 18 USD per night

Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean

Situated in the heart of Trafalgar town, this hostel is a great deal. It’s a house with kitchen, living room and bathroom where you rent one of the 3 rooms available. No internet available. You will need to bargain hard to get the 50 EC (18 USD) price. The place is walking distance from many hiking trails like Waitukubuli Route and Trafalgar Falls and well connected with Rouseau with minivans (1.30 USD, 10 minutes). The surroundings are impressive and the views from the guesthouse simply spectacular.

3 Rivers Eco Lodge (Rosalie – Dominica)

Price: 10 USD per night

Budget Travel: 7 Cheap Places To Sleep in the Caribbean

Located in the heart of the forest, staying at 3 Rivers Eco Lodge is a truly magical experience. Everything here is ecologic. Power is suply by solar pannels, fruit comes from the trees and the water from the rivers. The british owner Jem has done a great job here and the surroudings are wonderful. It’s the perfect place to connect with nature and hike into the forest. There are different options for accomodations from hammocks (10USD) or camping (12USD) to fully equiped cabins (price depends on the number of people). There is wifi available for a fee.
